All of the same metadata is used for this subset. The citation title is modified to replace "Seasonal" with "Crucial" and only the following seasonal ranges are included: anything with a "crucial" (CRU) designation in the RANGE attribute field (Select By Attributes... &gt; "RANGE" LIKE '%CRU%').</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>This data set represents the 2021 mule deer seasonal range boundaries for Wyoming. Seasonal range delineations depict lands that are important in each season for certain biological processes within a herd unit. Seasonal range boundaries are based on long-term observation data, specific research projects, and professional judgement. Ranges are digitized at a scale of 1:100,000 using USGS 1:100,000 DRGs as a backdrop for heads up digitizing, and are revised as needed by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Current seasonal range definitions are based on a 1990 document drafted by the Wyoming Chapter of The Wildlife Society in cooperation with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and federal land agencies.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV></idAbs>
<idPurp>This data set was developed for statewide and regional use. By understanding the spatial and temporal patterns of land/habitat use, wildlife managers increase their ability to maintain and enhance populations and important habitats. When used to work with the land managers, the goal of designated seasonal ranges is to limit human presence and disturbance in the most important areas during the most sensitive periods.</idPurp>

<suppInfo>The Wyoming Game and Fish Department initially developed crucial winter ranges in the early 1960's. Herd unit boundaries and other seasonal ranges were first delineated in the early 1970's based on the knowledge of local wildlife biologists and game wardens. Tagging and radio collar studies were used to refine boundaries. Data to revise seasonal ranges come from three sources: 1) The Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Wildlife Observation System. This database contains millions of wildlife observation records inclduing locations, dates, and other relevant information. 2) Research data from animal movement studies performed by Wyoming Game and Fish, federal agencies, universitiy researchers, and industry consultants. 3) Knowledge of local field personnel and land owners. Game and Fish biologists are encouraged to update seasonal range boundaries at 5-year intervals or whenever new information indicates that revisions are warranted.</suppInfo>

<stepDesc>Update Herdunit 207: Areas near Shell Creek and the Bighorn River (between Greybull and Manderson) that were formerly YRL range are now labeled as WYL range to emphasize their importance as winter ranges. A large block in the interior of Hunt Area 47 was changed from YRL to OUT since no deer are found there and habitats are not suitable. Areas along Paintrock Creek and Nowood River (upstream from the confluence with Paintrock Creek) were changed from YRL to CRUWYL to emphasize their importance as winter ranges. An area near the Renner WHMA was changed from WIN to WYL. An area east of Renner WHMA at higher elevations changed from CRUWYL to WYL. Herdunit 210: Areas north of Dry Creek were changed from OUT to YRL to reflect presence of deer. Herdunit 321: Areas of high elevation near the Bighorn National Forest boundary and habitats along Shell Creek were changed from SSF to WYL to emphasize their importance as winter ranges. An area in the northwest portion of Hunt Area 52 was changed from CRUWYL to WYL due to the lack of winter observations.</stepDesc>

<stepDesc>Dissolve on fields Species and Range (output as single part polygons). This removes theHerd Unit Areas from the feature leaving only the Seasonal Ranges and Species information. This was done for simplified data management and maintenance.
Remove all WRIR (Wind River Indian Reservation) and YNP (Yellowstone National Park) coding designations from the attributes. Merge all split polygons that have the same Range Type (ex. YNPYR - YNP = YR + neighbor of YR = merge result of YR) or (ex. WRIROUT - WRIR = OUT + neighbor of OUT = merge result of OUT).
Delete features with a Range of "NOH" except those with a combined Range designation (ex. NOHWIN - NOH = WIN) which are then merged with the neighboring poly that has the same range (ex. WIN + WIN = WIN).
Remove sliver polygons.
Update attributes fields in metadata to reflect the removal of NOH, WRIR, and YNP.

<stepDesc>Revisions to seasonal ranges involved relatively minor boundary changes to some ranges, and extensive revisions and changes in to seasonal range types due to current trends in animal movements and locations in other areas. Most of the revisions were data driven with WOS queries providing substantial justification for the charges. A few locations were WOS data is less definitive were still updated, using anecdotal information gathered from hunters and landowners, as well as WGFD personnel.
Mule Deer Seasonal Range updates were made in the South Wind River and Sweetwater Herd Units.
Consultations with BLM, USFS and WGFD personnel were completed while reviewing these seasonal ranges prior to changes being brought to WGFD Services Division for implementation.
Revisions came from the South Lander Wildlife Biologist District to the Cheyenne Services Division GIS Shop on 6/6/2011.
Revisions were made to the most recent version of elk11sr. The elk11sr feature was projected to WyLam, revisions made, topology was run to check for gaps and overlaps, Acres and SQMiles fields were recalculated, metadata was updated and the feature was re-projected to GCS NAD 27. Feature is stored in a File Geodatabase. </stepDesc>

<edom>
<edomv>CRU</edomv>
<edomvd>Crucial. These areas can describe any particular seasonal range or habitat component (often winter or winter/yearlong range), but describes that component which has been documented as the determining factor in a population's ability to maintain itself at a certain level (theoretically at or above the population objective) over the long term.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>SSF</edomv>
<edomvd>Spring/Summer/Fall. A population or portion of a population of animals use the documented habitats within this range from the end of the previous winter to the onset of persistent winter conditions (variable, but commonly this period is between 5/1 and 11/30).</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>SWR</edomv>
<edomvd>Severe Winter Relief. A documented survival range which may or may not be considered a crucial range area as defined above. It is used to a great extent, only in occasionally extremely severe winters (e.g., 2 years out of 10).</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>WIN</edomv>
<edomvd>Winter. A population or portion of a population of animals use the documented suitable habitat within this range annually, in substantial numbers only during the winter (variable, but commonly between 12/1 and 4/30).</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>WYL</edomv>
<edomvd>Winter/Yearlong. A population or portion of a population of animals makes general use of the documented suitable habitat within this range on a year-round basis. But during the winter months (between 12/1 and 4/30), there is a significant influx of additional animals into the area from other seasonal ranges.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>YRL</edomv>
<edomvd>Yearlong. A population or portion of a population of animals makes general use of the suitable documented habitat within the range on a year-round basis. Exception: occasionally, under severe conditions (e.g., extremely severe winters, or drought) animals may leave the area.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>UND</edomv>
<edomvd>Undetermined/Undocumented. Areas or habitats which are expected to or do support a population or portion of a population of animals. The distribution and importance of the area to the population has not been sufficiently documented to designate seasonal range occupancy.</edomvd>

<eaover>The primary item of interest in the polygon attribute table is RANGE which indicates the seasonal range type. The SPECIES code indicates the species, the HERDUNIT code is a three-digit number indicating the herd unit number, and the ATTRIBUTE code is a combination of SPECIES-HERDUNIT-RANGE.</eaover>
