This layer contains 147,806 point locations of Wyoming well permit locations on file with the Wyoming State Engineer's Office. Priority dates range from December 31, 1867 to December 12, 2013. It is meant to be used as one resource for well locations within the Wyoming State Engineer's database. New technology provided by ePermit provides more accurate and current information. Users are HIGHLY encouraged to do their own queries and mapping from the tools provided by this internet application (https://seoweb.wyo.gov). Most points are located only to the nearest 40 acre parcel although there are increasing numbers of gps locations. Due to the transition to ePermit some data may be missing.

<procdesc>The well permit data for the dataset exists in the Wyoming State Engineer's Office ePermit application (https://seoweb.wyo.gov). The ePermit application generates GIS point locations based on location information entered and/or updated within ePermit. Any records that contain a status of abandoned, cancelled, expired or rejected are eliminated from the query to produce the SEOwells dataset. There are some values of 0 in the latitude/longitude fields. They do have a spatial location. Whether or not it is a correct spatial location is unknown at this time. Furthermore, there were latitude/longitude adjustments made in ArcMap that are not reflective in the SEO ePermit. </procdesc>

<horizpar>There are two sources of error associated with the transfer of location description from Township/Range/Section/quarter/quarter (TRSQQ) to latitude/longitude. First, because the latitude/longitude generated is the centroid of the quarter-quarter Sections, the actual well location could be anywhere within the quarter-quarter section, or +/- 279 meters. Second, the program used to convert the TRSQQ to latitude/longitude assumes all quarter-quarter sections are the same size and shape, but in fact many section are irregular in size which can create irregular quarter-quarters. Because of this, some well locations were inaccurately placed in an adjacent quarter-quarter section.
